Steps to Become an Insurance Agent

A career as an insurance agent offers flexibility, unlimited earning potential, and the chance to make a real impact by helping people protect what matters most. Agents gain independence, build lasting client relationships, and create a sustainable business with room to grow.
1. Meet Basic Requirements
-
Be at least 18 years old
-
Have a high school diploma (or equivalent)
-
Pass a background check (some states restrict for certain criminal convictions)
-
2. Choose the Type of Insurance You Want to Sell
-
Life & Health (includes Medicare, life insurance, annuities, disability, long-term care)
-
Property & Casualty (home, auto, renters, business insurance)
-
You can pursue one line of authority first, then add others later.
-
3. Complete Pre-Licensing Education
-
Most states require 20–52 hours of coursework per line of authority
-
Classes can be taken online or in-person through approved providers (ExamFx)
-
Topics cover insurance fundamentals, ethics, state laws, and product-specific knowledge
-
4. Pass the State Licensing Exam
-
Schedule your exam with the state testing provider (e.g., Pearson VUE, Prometric)
-
Exams are typically multiple choice
-
Passing scores usually require 70% or higher
-
5. Apply for Your Insurance License
-
Submit an application to your state’s Department of Insurance
-
Pay the application fee
-
Provide fingerprints/background check (varies by state)
-
6. Obtain Errors & Omissions (E&O) Insurance
-
Protects you against mistakes or omissions when advising clients
-
Required by most carriers before contracting
-
7. Get Appointed with Insurance Carriers
-
Once licensed, you must be “appointed” by each insurance company you plan to sell for
-
Carriers review your background, run contracting paperwork, and issue your writing number
-
8. Maintain Continuing Education (CE)
-
Most states require CE every 1–2 years (e.g., 24 hours, including ethics)
-
Stay compliant to keep your license active
